Who can join a Skjervøy whale tour?

The open RIBs that run to the whales off Skjervøy set firm rules on who may board, from minimum age to back trouble, and the heated boats in the harbor are much more relaxed. For families and anyone with a bad back, that difference decides the trip. This guide sets the limits side by side, as each listing states them.

Why the open boats set firm limits

An open RIB is fast, and in a swell it slams from wave to wave. Each jolt travels up through the seat into your spine, which is why the RIB listings rule out back problems and pregnancy.

On the RIBs, 14 is the youngest age allowed, and 140 cm (4 ft 7 in) the shortest height. Either rule can stop a child, so a tall 13-year-old cannot go, and neither can a short teenager.

The covered boats move more gently and give you a warm place to sit, so their rules are much looser. That gap shapes almost every decision for families, and for anyone with a health worry.

These are the limits the listings state. If anything here touches you or someone in your group, ask the operator through the booking page before you pay. A short message now beats an awkward conversation at the harbor.

Children under 14

For families this is the deciding rule. The Tromsø day trips on this site all use open RIBs with an age or height limit, so a day from Tromsø with young children is not an option on our list.

A bus-plus-boat version of Skua Nature's heated trip also runs from Tromsø. We have not reviewed that listing here, so check its own age rules if you want to try it.

The heated boats in Skjervøy are the way in for younger kids. Skua Nature takes children from age 6 on its covered heated boat from ~$279, with a warm cabin to retreat to when small hands get cold.

Dervola's listing names no age limit for its heated cabin cruiser from ~$284. That makes it the only open door here for children under 6, but check with Dervola before you bring a toddler onto a winter sea.

Both mean reaching Skjervøy yourself and sleeping there. If the age rules push you toward a harbor boat, our comparison of the two starting points helps, and the winter road guide explains the drive.

Pregnancy, backs and mobility

Every listing here that sets health limits rules out pregnant travelers, Skua's covered boat included. Dervola's listing names no health limits, so check with Dervola before you book if you are pregnant.

Back problems rule you out of all three open RIBs. The slamming is the reason, and a heated cabin boat is the gentler choice if a doctor has cleared you for a boat at all.

Boarding any small boat in winter means stepping onto a moving deck, and harbor surfaces can be icy. Frozen Frontiers and Green Gold both list mobility impairments as not suitable on their RIBs.

Over 14, fit and keen on spray

Frozen Frontiers runs a 12-seat open RIB from the Skjervøy harbor, or with a partner bus from Tromsø as a second option. It holds 5.0 from 110+ reviews on GetYourGuide, the top score here, from ~$241.

Seasickness and fitness

Frozen Frontiers is the only listing here that names seasickness and low fitness as reasons to stay ashore. Its list is the strictest of the four main tours, so read it line by line before you book.

Skua Nature suggests taking seasickness tablets about two hours before departure if you are prone. A covered boat rolls less than a RIB bounces, but neither feels like a ferry on a flat day.

Our guide to rough sea or no whales off Skjervøy goes further on swell and seasickness. How the two kinds of boat ride is compared in open RIB versus heated cabin boat.

Green Gold and its long medical list

Green Gold of Norway's day trip from Tromsø, from ~$365, carries the longest list of limits of any tour here. It rules out claustrophobia and epilepsy, along with heart or breathing problems and anyone over 120 kg (264 lb).

Pregnancy and back trouble are excluded too, as is any pre-existing condition. Green Gold supplies the suits and goggles to anyone who clears every line, at the highest price of the five. If someone in your group does not, the list decides for you.

Older travelers

None of the listings sets an upper age limit. What counts is the health list, so a fit 75-year-old can ride a RIB while a younger traveler with a bad back cannot.

For many older guests the long day weighs more than the boat. A Tromsø trip means a 05:00 bus and about eight hours on the road, while a harbor boat from Skjervøy takes three to four hours with a hot drink at the end.

Before you book

  • Check age and height against the listing itself, not only this page
  • Read the health list line by line for every person in your group
  • Ask the operator through the booking page if anything is unclear
  • Pick a heated boat in Skjervøy if anyone is under 14
  • Pack seasickness tablets if anyone is prone

Prices for every option sit in our cost guide, and five layers for a Skjervøy whale boat covers dressing children and adults for the cold. Why orcas and humpbacks winter off Skjervøy explains what you are all going out to find.

Who can come

Families and health, in five answers

Can children join a whale day trip from Tromsø to Skjervøy?

Not on the tours on this site. The Tromsø day trips use open RIBs with a minimum age of 14 or a height of 140 cm. With younger children, book one of the heated boats that sail from the Skjervøy harbor instead.

What is the minimum age on Skua Nature's heated boat?

Six. Skua's covered heated boat takes children from age 6, with a warm cabin on board. Dervola's listing names no age limit, so check with Dervola before booking for young children.

Can I go whale watching off Skjervøy while pregnant?

Every listing here that sets health limits says no, including Skua's covered boat. Dervola's listing is silent on health, so ask the operator about pregnancy before you pay.

Is there a weight limit on the whale boats?

Green Gold of Norway lists a limit of 120 kg (264 lb). It is the only listing that gives one, and the others name none. Ask the operator if you are unsure, because suits and seats come in set sizes.

Which tour suits someone who gets seasick?

A covered heated boat from Skjervøy rolls less than an open RIB. Frozen Frontiers lists proneness to seasickness as not suitable. Skua suggests tablets about two hours before you sail.
