Tromsø day trip or Skjervøy harbour start?

Every whale tour on this site ends up in the same water off Skjervøy. What differs is how you get there, either on a 05:00 bus from Tromsø or from a harbor a short way from your bed. Both work well for different people, and this guide sorts out which one fits you.

Same whales, two ways to reach them

The orcas and humpbacks feed in the fjords around Skjervøy, roughly four hours by road north-east of Tromsø. Whichever tour you book, the whale watching itself happens in the same stretch of sea.

The choice is about everything around those hours on the water. Either you sit on a bus for about 8 hours in total and sleep in Tromsø, or you move yourself north and start from the harbor.

The Tromsø day, hour by hour

On Arctic Adventure Tours' day from ~$343 you meet outside Scandic Ishavshotel at 04:45 for a 05:00 departure. The bus has Wi-Fi and a toilet, and the ride north takes about 4 hours.

Roughly 3 hours on an open RIB follow. A hot drink and a sandwich come before the drive back, and you reach Tromsø around 5:30 pm, tired but without having touched a steering wheel on icy roads.

That last point is the main reason to choose it. You never drive in the polar dark, and you keep the same hotel for your whole stay, with no bags to pack and no room to find up north.

The bus day also suits a tight schedule. You have one booking to make and one meeting point to find. Beyond that, the listing only asks you to bring your own breakfast for the bus.

The price is paid in sleep. A 04:45 meeting time means an alarm around 4 am, and two-thirds of the day goes by on a seat while the dark slides past the window.

The Skjervøy start, hour by hour

From the harbor the day looks very different. Dervola Adventure from ~$284 meets at 9:30 am at its office on Skjervøy Marina and is back about 2 pm, four hours that are all boat.

Skua Nature's heated boat runs about 3.5 hours from its base in town, and Frozen Frontiers' harbor RIB spends about 3 hours at sea. None of them needs a 4 am alarm, and breakfast can be a sit-down one.

The harbor start also opens a second try. If the first trip finds only distant fins, or the wind cancels it, you can book another boat for the next day without a second 12-hour ride.

Staying up north has a quieter side as well. Skjervøy is far from city light, so a clear night there can be very dark, and our northern lights guide covers the evening hours.

Staying in Skjervøy for a night or two?

Skua Nature's covered, heated boat leaves from its base in town, with no special suit to put on and room for 12 guests at most.

What the harbor start asks of you

You first have to cover about 160 km (100 miles) to Skjervøy by car or on the public bus. The quickest road route usually involves a ferry, and in winter the trip happens mostly in darkness on roads that can be icy and windblown.

You also need a bed in Skjervøy, a small fishing town on an island, with a few thousand people in the whole municipality. Book it early and plan for a change of hotel; our guide to the road north covers the drive and the bus.

Price the extras too. The harbor boats cost less than the Tromsø days, but the drive plus a night's stay closes much of that gap, as the cost guide works out.

One listing, both versions

Frozen Frontiers from ~$241 sells both shapes in one listing. You either meet the 12-seat RIB at the Skjervøy harbor or ride a scheduled partner bus from Tromsø, about 4 hours each way, which costs more.

Choose the right option when you book, since the two have different meeting points. With 5.0 from 110+ reviews on GetYourGuide, it is the top-scoring tour on this site in either form.

A 12-hour Skua Nature option exists too, pairing the heated boat with a bus ride from Tromsø. We list only the harbor version, but the other is there if you want the covered boat without driving.

The other long day from Tromsø

Green Gold of Norway's trip from ~$365 is the second big Tromsø option, 4.7 from 1,200+ reviews on GetYourGuide. Its drawback is a 5:20 am start from Prostneset bus terminal and the same long day as our pick, at a higher price.

Its group is also larger, up to 24 guests split into boats of 4–12, so compare the two listings side by side before you book.

Who should pick which

  • No car, a short trip and a hotel in Tromsø? The bus day from Tromsø
  • Nervous about driving on ice in the dark? The bus day again
  • Already in Skjervøy, or touring the north by car? A harbor boat
  • Children under 14 in the group? A heated boat from the harbor, since the RIB days do not take them
  • Hoping for two tries at the whales? Two nights in Skjervøy and two harbor trips
  • Prone to seasickness? A covered boat, as the boat guide explains

Families should read the limits per tour before booking. Skua takes children from 6, and our age and health guide lists what every listing says.

Whales are never guaranteed from either start. More days near the whales mean more chances, which is the strongest case for staying in Skjervøy if your trip allows it; see what happens when the sea stays empty.

Where to start

Choosing a start point, answered

How early does the Tromsø day trip start?

Arctic Adventure Tours meets at 04:45 outside Scandic Ishavshotel and leaves at 05:00 sharp. Green Gold of Norway leaves Prostneset bus terminal at 5:20 am. Both are back in Tromsø in the early evening.

Do I need a car to start from Skjervøy?

Not strictly, since a public bus runs between Tromsø and Skjervøy. Either way you need a bed in Skjervøy for at least one night, because the harbor boats leave in the morning.

Is the whale watching better from Skjervøy?

No. The boats from both starts head into the same fjords. The difference is time, since the harbor tours give you 3–4 hours on the water without the 8-hour bus ride around it.

Can I do two whale trips?

Yes, and staying in Skjervøy makes it easy, with a harbor boat on two different days. Two Tromsø day trips are possible too, but that means two alarms before 4:30 am.

Which tour sells both versions?

Frozen Frontiers offers a Skjervøy harbor start and a version with a partner bus from Tromsø in the same listing. The bus option costs more, so choose carefully when you book.
